The Northern Plains of Costa Rica are not heavily populated and are the driest area of the country. This is the home of the most active volcano in central America The Arenal Volcano and Lake Arenal The unique characteristics of this area make it one of the more popular tourist attractions. The Monterverde Cloud Forest Preserve provides the best place to watch the quetzal one of the most dazzlingly beautiful birds of the tropics.

Costa Rica Northern Plains RegionThe Arenal volcano has constant eruptions of smoke and lava that can spectacular at night. The lava can be seen sliding down the sides of the volcano to make it one of the most exciting attractions in the area.

Zip lines have been erected by tour companies that give Birdseye views of the forest canopies for the more adventurism one can ride a zip line for close to ½ mile starting out at over 150 ft off the ground. White water rafting on a fast river of a slow float ride on one of the slower tributaries gives something for everyone to enjoy while bird watching or taking in nature exploring the area on horseback is also an excellent way to explore this magnificent area.

Lake Arenal is one of the areas real treasures its hydropower dam furnishes Costa Rica with over 70% of its eccentricity. The 33 sq. miles of water make for year round fun whether it is sport fishing for rainbow or enjoying world-class windsurfing or sail boarding

Many retirees are choosing the features of this diverse area to locate all forms of real estate are available from people buying lots and building themselves. Or buying a new home from a developer.

The international airport in Liberia making it easier for residents and tourists to get to this area. It is about a 4 hour drive from San Jose and one passes through many typical Costa Rican Communities. Traveling along the Pan-American Highway to Nicaragua little by little it gets dryer and hotter with fewer trees. The forest gives way to farms with pastures, horses and cattle and fewer trees The area has been named Guanacaasta for the this unique tree.
